Gallery Page and Strange is pleased to host a new exhibition of work by Wayne Boucher RCA. This very special opening and body of work is in support of the Japan Earthquake / Asia Pacific Tsunami Relief. 20% of the proceeds from this exhibition will be donated by the artist and the gallery to the Canadian Red Cross.

The “Blue Pool” series of paintings evolved from a 1996 small 10” x 12” painting entitled “Waiting for Paris” which used a tiled walkway around a blue surface. All the paintings in this exhibit are blue, reminiscent of water, lit from within, and most use a common tile - like geometric pattern walkway/platform around parts of the edge.

The Conseil des Arts de la Baie operates the just opened brand new Le Trécarré galerie. Le Trécarré is located,at Université Sainte Anne, Nouvelle Ecosse. It's part of the new centre Acadien called the Rendez-vous d'la Baie at Pointe- de-l' Eglise/Church Point, Nova Scotia, Canada.

La géométrie du désir

L’œuvre de Wayne nous touche au niveau macroscopique. Elle nous attire comme une force gravitationnelle et nous affecte selon une courbe parabolique. « On n’est pas ici dans le délicat à l’échelle micrométrique. »¹ Wayne emploie des éléments structurels tels que la tension, l’équilibre et la profondeur pour nous plonger au cœur d’un monde sans structure. Il s’agit de la géométrie du désir derridéen. Un éclair de génie newtonien sur la force gravitationnelle qui nous dit : comme la pomme qui tombe de l’arbre, nous tombons. C’est cette recherche universelle du centre qui nous FIGURE .

« La natation, pour un nageur, ce n’est pas un simple mécanisme de survie, mais une forme d’adaptation à l’eau. »² Dans sa déclaration artistique, Wayne nous indique que son œuvre porte sur des milieux aqueux. Il nous invite à nous plonger dans son œuvre pour nous y « ressourcer »³. Pour lui, la source, c’est, dans ce contexte, à la fois l’origine et la destination. Le centre décentré. Il se sert de la lumière pour nous suspendre dans le contraste parabolique entre la projection et la convergence et nous invite à nous attarder dans l’intervalle. Nous émergeons de cette faille en faisant le lien entre source ponctuelle et mise au point. La dimension peut servir à « impliquer une direction, impliquer des mesures, impliquer le plus et le moins »⁴. Mais dans l’œuvre de Wayne, la dimension est l’espace méditatif entre l’observateur et l’observé.

The Geometry of desire

Wayne's work affects us on a macroscopic level. It isgravitational in pull; parabolic in effect. "No delicate micrometer here".¹ He uses structural elements such as tension, balance, and depth to draw us into a structureless center. This is the geometry of Derridean desire. A flash of Newtonian insight into the gravitational pull that ensures: as the apple falls so do we. It is through this universal search for center we are figured out.

"Swimming for a swimmer is not mere survival but the appropriate response to water".² In his artist statement, Wayne tells us his work is about watery places. He asks us to fall into his work in a "search for home".³ Home represents origin as well as end in this context. The decentered center. Using light to suspend us in the parabolic contrast of projection and convergence, Wayne invites us to dwell in the interval. We emerge from the breach linking point source to focus.Dimension may be used to "imply direction, imply measurement, imply the more and the less".⁴ But in Wayne's work, dimension is the meditative space between observer and observed.
